Abacos Yacht Charters & Sailing Vacations

cruise abaco

Embark on a unique sailing adventure with Cruise Abaco and take the helm while learning the ropes. EXPLORE THE NORTH ABACOSThe North Abacos are more off the beaten track than their fellow islands Central and South. For example, Walker’s Cay is nearly 100 miles north of Marsh Harbour. Yet, this is an area with spectacular fishing, especially for billfish and bluefin tuna.

Continue your adventure this morning with a stop at Fowl Cay Underwater Park with a visit to the reef for some snorkeling. Take an afternoon sail to the delightful Man-O-War Cay settlement – the boat building capital of the islands. Here you can explore the small shops of the Cay, visit Albury’s Boat Building and Canvas Shop and discover the rich history of this quaint, peaceful island. Upon exiting the airport please look for the taxi holding a “Cruise Abaco” sign. Rates from the airport to the Abaco Beach Resort will run $20 for 2 people, $3 per additional person, plus tip. Taxi wait time is currently $20 per half hour; we will review all options for obtaining your provisions 30 days prior to sailing.

Cruising in Abacos

Seriously, we did travel to the Abacos for 5 days with only two carry on bags. Even Daniel was impressed that I was able to narrow down my packing to a carry on bag. Due to the shallow waters, tide tables must be consulted, especially for entrances to anchorages with boats drawing more than four feet. Lauderdale sells an inexpensive and excellent annual tide calendar for the Bahamas based on Nassau and Miami Harbor reference stations. With a variety of options to choose from, there’s something to suit any need.

WHAT ABOUT HURRICANE SEASON?

If you are looking for the ideal beach getaway with a combination of sailing and sightseeing, Abaco might be what you are looking for. We are closed during hurricane season August – October as are most of the bars, restaurants & other establishments in the area as this is considered off-season. We are located at dock 7 in Boat Harbour Marina at the Abaco Beach Resort, about minutes from the Marsh Harbour Airport. As you enter the resort you will pass the guard gate, turn left before the resort office and follow the Cruise Abaco signs to our base. We stayed on Lubbers Quarters at Lubbers Landing which also has a restaurant and bar. I would recommend a stop at Lubbers Landing for a drink or dinner while staying at the Abacos.

No matter the type of fun you’re looking for, our mission is to make sailing in the Bahamas an experience you’ll remember for a lifetime. Charter guests can meet the Nordhavn in Marsh Harbour, then spend a day heading north. Or, the company works with Tropical Ocean Airways, which has a floatplane and can coordinate to fly guests in to meet the boat and get started fishing and diving right away. Grand Bay, Moraine Cay and Spanish Cay are other out-of-the-way islands near Walker’s ripe for exploration and each with its own personality. Considered the ‘boating capital of the Bahamas’, the Abaco Islands form the northern part of this Commonwealth and are located about 180 miles east of the Florida coast. In 2019, Hurricane Dorian directly hit and severely damaged many of the Abacos.

WHAT DAMAGE DEPOSIT WILL BE REQUIRED FOR OUR CHARTER?

Rates from the Marsh Harbour airport to the Abaco Beach Resort will run $20 for 2 people, $3 per additional person, plus tip. Taxi service from our base to Maxwell’s will run approximately $10 each way plus tip. You may elect to have your taxi wait while you shop – wait time runs $20 for each half hour. Please note taxis do not accept credit cards so please be sure to have cash available for your taxi service.

Sample Itinerary

Kayak, snorkel and paddle board the crystal clear waters of Tilloo bank and enjoy shelling and sand dollar hunting. Relax and enjoy a late afternoon sail back to Marsh Harbour reflecting on the abundant beauty of our island paradise. Snorkel gear, fishing gear, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards are available to rent during your charter. Please be sure to reserve these items prior to your arrival so they can be aboard your boat and ready to go when you are. Hope Town is charming and it is fun to just walk the streets and stop by many of the local shops. Again, we hear that many celebs have graced this local spot in the Abacos and we now know why!

If you are planning an ASA charter please select “Captained Charter” and indicate which courses you wish along with the number of students. Guana Cay was another one of our favorite Abaco Islands to visit by boat. There are two famous restaurants and bars on Guana Cay, Grabbers and Nippers. Go to Grabbers if you want to relax on the beach, and go to Nippers if you want to party.

The outer cays and islands create naturally protected waters commonly referred to as the Sea of Abaco. Fair winds and a peaceful sea are what usually wait for charter yachts cruising through the Bahamas. During the winter months cool breezes from the northwest fill the air and a stronger wind fills the sails of cruising vessels. Routes along the Sea of Abaco consist of short passages and line-of-sight navigation making for a tranquil trip. Some captains may find a challenge among the shallow waters where it is necessary to take note of the tidal range, which can fluctuate during a full or new moon.

Please note check-in on your arrival day is no earlier than 3pm and check-out on your departure day begins at 8am for a 10am departure from the boat. Should your flight arrive early in the day we will gladly hold your gear at our base until you are able to board at 3pm – so you can relax and enjoy a leisurely lunch at the resort. Great Abaco and Little Abaco islands with their surrounding reefs and cays are the northernmost islands of the Bahamas and form one of its most popular cruising grounds. Great Abaco is frequently referred to as the mainland forming the western border of the Sea of Abaco. The eastern border is defined by dozens of cays, reefs, and passes to the Atlantic Ocean. The Sea of Abaco is well protected from the Atlantic Ocean and provides an idyllic, lakelike, cruising area over the Little Bahama Bank.

We’re passionate about what we do, and there’s nothing that gives us greater satisfaction than helping others embark on Bahamas sailing adventures they’ll remember for years to come. Best of all, we make it easy to customize an Abaco boat charter to meet your specific needs. We post our rates online, we’ve put together a sample itinerary to help you build ideas for your own Bahamas sailing vacation, and you’ll also find guest info and tips on getting here.

We require flight arrival information for every charter as if you are flying in on your charter arrival day we will arrange to have a special Cruise Abaco taxi to meet your flight. We recommend you proceed directly to our base from the airport and advise your taxi driver we will contact him when you are ready to obtain your provisions. After you have dropped off your gear & any passengers that do not wish to shop, your taxi will then take you to obtain your provisions; Maxwell’s is the grocery store and Jimmy’s liquor for liquor.

Visa, Mastercard and American Express are accepted in many shops, restaurants and fuel docks but please ask first. Please be sure to bring enough cash or traveler’s checks so you do not waste time chasing money. It is not advised to cruise at night in the Bahamas archipelago due to a shortage of navigational aids, or their operation. Eyeball navigation, especially the colour of the water and the various cays, reefs, coral heads, and rocks marked on charts, are the best clues, and these can only be seen in daylight. A popular route for a passage to the Abacos is to start from West Palm Beach or further south and enter the Bahamas at West End, Grand Bahamas.

The MY.6, with its advanced equipment, increases the distance that you can cruise. With an economical speed of sixteen knots, it is possible to envisage many extended trips without compromising on comfort. The steering has excellent assistance whether you’re on the flybridge or in the saloon, so you can choose to be sociable or enjoy time alone – it’s up to you. With Bareboat and Captained charters, we’re the only ASA School in the Bahamas that offers a great way to learn and vacation all in one program. We are unable to hold reservations until your charter is under deposit. If we are unable to re-sell your charter week all monies paid at time of cancellation would be forfeited.

Countless activities, ranging from visiting historic sites to snorkeling to taste testing local dishes, will fill your days with unforgettable memories. Look around, what you’re searching for may be closer than you think. At Cruise Abaco, we strive to provide our guests with the time of their lives.
